ACADEMICS

DCA's PEDAGOGICAL FRAMEWORK

The philosophical origin of Dockery Christian Academy is derived from over twenty years of the professional background of Reverend Rueben Dockery. Ministry has always been a central inspiration for his outreach and service to humanity. Based on biblical teaching, in 2003, Reverend Dockery launched a fatherhood initiative, focused on replacing fathers into the life of their children. In 2006 he began to lecture in churches and on college campuses on the topic of Fatherhood Development. He authored his first workbook, Framework for Fatherly Instructions: Understanding the Male Growth Process. In 2010 he authored a workbook for parent involvement, Parent Involvement Training Workbook: A Guide for Parent Engagement in Public Education. Over the last seventeen years, Reverend Dockery has been applying his research-based literature and concepts in the social service arena.

PARENT ORIENTATION

As a condition of admission for their children, parents are required to complete 24 hours of orientation. This orientation is designed to thoroughly engage parents with the school’s philosophy and expectations. Additionally, parents will participate in the planning of student disciplinary policies and character development for students of the school. The primary reference for the parent orientation is the  Parent Involvement Training Workbook: A Guide for Parent Engagement in Public Education workbook.

STUDENT ALIGNMENT TO SCHOOL CULTURE

Dockery Christian Academy serves in a paternal role for our students. The primary tool for behavioral modification and character development is the Framework for Fatherly Instructions: Understanding the Male Growth Process workbook.

ACADEMIC REMEDIATION

Recognizing the likely academic deficiency in Math and Reading on part of our students, intensive academic remediation will be given during the first few weeks of school.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CURRICULUM /INSTRUCTION

Consistent with the Interdisciplinary Curriculum model, teaching staff strategically applies techniques and language from more than one subject area of study to examine a central theme, issue, problem, topic, or experience. Moreover, our scholars will be challenged to incorporate knowledge gained into their day to day activities throughout their studies.

DCA'S ETHOS

Inspired by over twenty–three years of ministry and outreach, DCA’s founder, Reverend Rueben Dockery holds the belief that there are four corners of healthy male instruction. Those four corners are teaching the importance of personal character based in faith, the acquisition of knowledge in search of self-purpose, the pursuing of scholastic aptitude and striving to reach personal achievement. Our students are held by our Motto "Nobleman - Scholar -Industrialist" Accordingly, as a vital aspect of orientating students to benefit from focused instruction and learning the following pro-social lessons are essential to the success of Dockery Academy’s educational programming.

FAITH

According to scripture (Psalms 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”), we believe that an education-based in faith provides students with a strong sense of direction in life. All of our teachers will encourage faith, model Christ-like values, and be prepared to answer students’ questions from a solid foundation of scriptural principles. Furthermore, we subscribe to the notion that teachers should bring the truth of God’s Word into the study of all subject matters and help students find their way in this world that seems confusing or even conflicting at times. Additionally, teachers are charged with the responsibility of helping to shape curriculum, guide students with loving discipline, and lead them to a saving knowledge of Jesus.

KNOWLEDGE

The word of God teaches (“For the Lord give wisdom, from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding”, Proverbs 2:6) A well-rounded education for our student learners affords them access to knowledge of the world around them and empowers them to become good stewards of the earth. Furthermore, it heavily influences their view of life. Finally, it helps our students to build opinions and have points of view on important matters in life.

SCHOLARSHIP

Anyone who learns is a scholar.  Learning is measured by a change in behavior after instruction. It doesn't take a Latin scholar to understand the word scholar. DCA instruction is intentional about developing scholars. Guided by scripture, our educational programming is designed to prepare our students to enter the workforce and become a contributing member of society (2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”).

ACHIEVEMENT

Inspired by scripture, (1 Corinthians 9:24, “know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize?, so run that ye may obtain”), at DCA, we believe that the personal achievement of our students will be made manifest in their pursuits of life, well after leaving our institution. It leads to a sense of pride and contribution to humanity.
